Luxembourg: global hub for alternative funds and wealth structures

In recent years, Luxembourg has firmly established itself as a global center for alternative asset structures. With assets under management (AuM) increasing from approximately €1 trillion to €2.4 trillion in just five years, the Grand Duchy demonstrates that scale, stability, and innovation converge here.

Growth that radiates confidence

The CSSF AIFM Reporting Dashboard 2024 figures demonstrate the rapid development of the market. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of alternative funds grew from 6,100 to over 10,000, while total assets under management more than doubled. This growth reflects not only investor confidence but also Luxembourg's ability to scale its fund infrastructure to meet international demand.

Which strategies are growing fastest?

  • Private equity : +274% to €774 billion

  • Funds of funds : +141% to €496 billion

  • Real estate funds : +104% to €326 billion

  • Infrastructure funds : +389% to €132 billion

Private equity, in particular, has become the dominant strategy, accounting for nearly a third of the market. At the same time, Luxembourg remains accessible to smaller players: 61% of funds have less than €100 million under management, underscoring the market's diversity.

Institutionally strong, retail on the rise

The majority of the market (95%) is still driven by institutional investors such as pension funds, family offices, and insurers. This confirms Luxembourg's reputation as a reliable and regulated environment.

In addition, the role of ELTIFs (European Long-Term Investment Funds) is growing rapidly. Since the 2023 reform, the number of Luxembourg ELTIFs has increased from 23 to 98 in 2024, representing 65% of all European ELTIFs. Luxembourg is thus responding to the trend of "democratization" of alternative investments.

Resilience and discipline

While leverage plays a role in the market, its use remains limited. Only hedge funds exhibit higher leverage levels, primarily due to their reliance on derivatives. This demonstrates the resilience and discipline of the Luxembourg fund market, even in challenging times.

Conclusion: scale, regulation and innovation

Luxembourg combines the best of both worlds: accessibility for smaller, specialized funds and scalability for large institutional players. The country continues to evolve without losing stability or reliability.

For investors seeking a solid foundation for alternative assets, Luxembourg reaffirms its role as a hotspot where structure, innovation, and confidence converge.
